Unfortunately there is no Borealis 2022. We hope to come back on board when the health and funding of the arts becomes more feasible.

Where is Borealis?

Borealis is located in the South Lake Union neighborhood. The projection mapping show will be on the facade of MOHAI, in the heart of South Lake Union Park. The light art installations will be spread out through South Lake Union Park and the urban landscape throughout the neighborhood.

What is Projection Mapping?

Projection mapping is a projection technique used to turn objects, most often the facades of buildings, into a display surface for video projection content. Often the videos projected will augment the surfaces of the building by playing with its architecture and creating a unique interactive illusion effect.

Are Tickets Needed?

Admission to the festival and light art walking tour is free and open to all. Tickets for time-slots to the projection mapping shows at MOHAI will need to be reserved for guaranteed admission. There will be multiple shows every evening, approximately 30 minutes in length. Please join our mailing list to be the first to know event updates.

Do I need to arrive at Borealis at a certain time?

To view the light art installations, you can arrive at any time and embark on the self-guided tour between the hours of 6pm - 11pm. The projection mapping showtimes will be announced closer to event date. There will be multiple shows every night.

Is each night the same?

The Projection Mapping Shows and Light Art Installation Self-Guided Tour will remain the same throughout the festival. Additionally, we will be working with venues, artists, and groups to provide additional programming that will vary daily, such as artist talks, workshops, and events. Please check out developing schedule to find out more.

Do I need to start at a specific location?

The projection mapping competition will be on the facade of MOHAI, but the self-guided tour can start anywhere you’d like.

What should I wear?

We encourage festival-goers to dress accordingly for Seattle fall weather. Our installations are waterproof, but you’re not. Make sure to bundle up, bring an umbrella just in case, and be ready for a chill. We will have inside programming for places to warm up and stay dry.

We also invite attendees to create and wear their own light-art outfits and join in on celebrating the beauty of light as a wearable artform.

Will there be swag?

Yes, we are excited to offer exclusive BOREALIS swag, featuring our logo and the Seattle skyline. Stay tuned for more info and our online store.

Will there be food and beverages available?

Our event will feature multiple food trucks, a beer garden, and other opportunities for some yummy treats throughout the experience.

How can I get involved with Borealis?

Borealis is always looking for volunteers to help with a variety of tasks. Please contact our team if you’d like to get involved in any way, be a sponsor, or donate to us directly, to help make sure our festival stays free for the community
